Technology companies discussing SPoF increases by 38% in 2022, finds GlobalData

Data and analytics company, GlobalData has revealed that the number of technology companies discussing Single Point of Failure (SPoF) has increased by 38% in 2022 as compared to 2019. SPoF refers to that component of a system which is capable of disrupting an operation’s entire system if it malfunctions.

Misa Singh, Analyst at GlobalData, said, “Companies are discussing having diverse data centers from different suppliers along with the duplication of data between these centers to avoid SPoFs. Each supply node, production facility, and logistical link represents a SPoF, which could jeopardize business continuity. Companies are maintaining close working and contractual relationships with key suppliers to avoid disruptions could result in SPoF.”

Single point of failure

In the technology industry, eMagin Corp reported equipment failure as an SPoF, which resulted in production delays. Backblaze mentioned a service outage in storing customer content, using Amazon’s simple storage service (S3). HIVE Blockchain Technologies indicated single point of failure around the loss of private keys associated with digital currency assets which impacted investments.

The automotive, energy and retail sectors also discussed SPoF. Automotive company Embark Technology mentioned dependency on a single original equipment manufacturer (OEM) as a SPoF. Enphase Energy, a power company, said reliance on one single source of energy as a SPoF. It is using photovoltaic generation along with a traditional inverter to avoid single point of failure. Meanwhile, The Gap mentioned its reliance on third-party public cloud infrastructure providers as a SPoF, citing potential security issues.
