In a recent development, Microsoft has announced the termination of support for the Windows Subsystem for Android™️ (WSA), signaling the end of an era for Windows 11 users accessing Android apps. The WSA, a feature allowing the installation and operation of a broad range of Android apps on Windows 11, particularly through the Amazon Appstore, was made possible through a collaborative deal between Amazon and Microsoft.
Effective March 5, 2025, Windows 11 users will no longer have official support for Android apps, and consequently, access to the Amazon Appstore will be discontinued. This move impacts not only the Appstore but also all applications and games reliant on WSA. Technical support will be available for users until the specified date.
Users who have already installed the Amazon Appstore or Android apps on their Windows 11 system before March 5, 2024, will retain access to these applications until the deprecation date of March 5, 2025.
Amazon has outlined its plan to restrict new users from searching the Amazon Appstore and associated apps from the Microsoft Store. Additionally, Amazon disclosed that developers will be unable to submit new apps targeting Windows 11 after March 5, 2024. However, those with existing apps can continue to submit updates until the complete discontinuation of the Amazon Appstore on Windows 11.
The decision to terminate the Windows Subsystem for Android may be attributed to low usage or limited demand for Android apps on Windows, particularly in light of the current scarcity of Windows tablet hardware in the market.
