Cyberattacks are becoming increasingly common these days, as criminals seek to take advantage of the fact that more and more businesses are reliant on digital systems. During the holiday weekend of July 4, 2022, global IT products and services provider, SHI International fell victim to coordinated and professional malware attack. However, quick reactions from SHI’s security and IT teams helped swiftly identify the incident and take measures to minimize the impact on its systems and operations.
“These preventative measures included taking some systems, including SHI’s public websites and email, offline while the attack was investigated, and the integrity of those systems was assessed,” reported SHI in its blogpost. “Customers have full access to their account teams and specialists via both email and phone. While the investigation into the incident is ongoing – and SHI is liaising with federal bodies including the FBI and CISA – there is no evidence to suggest that customer data was exfiltrated during the attack. No third-party systems in the SHI supply chain were affected.”
SHI declared on July 6, 2022, that its staff have regained access to email and said that the IT teams are working to bring the other systems back to full availability securely and reliably.
Cyberattacks are on the rise dramatically.
Microsoft had recently released significant updates to the long-running malware campaign targeting Linux systems known as the 8220 gang. Atlassian, which had disclosed the critical vulnerability CVE-2022-26134 on June 2, soon fell victim to the 8220 gang as the latter exploited the Atlassian flaw to install malware on Linux systems. The group also tried to target the Windows systems by injecting a script into a PowerShell memory process using the Atlassian flaw.
Not only private firms, but government organizations also are becoming victims of professional cyberattacks.
Ireland’s Department of Health was attacked twice in May by Conti Ransomware according to the Chief Operations Officer of the Health Service Executive. The National Cyber Security Centre had to take the help of Europol, cybersecurity experts, and many others to get rid of the ransomware attack.
While it’s impossible to eliminate the risk of a cyberattack, businesses can take steps to protect themselves by using comprehensive cybersecurity solutions that can protect them and offer data protection and endpoint protection. In addition, they should also maintain backup of their data. Not all businesses, homes also need to have proper Cyberprotection mechanism in place with remote or hybrid modes of working defining the new workplace norms.
