DAILYHOSTNEWS, November 11, 2011 – Flash for mobile may no longer be a priority. Yesterday software company Adobe announced that it was discontinuing work on the popular graphic platform for mobile devices and shifting its focus towards HTML5.
Commenting on the company blog, Adobe stated, “We will no longer continue to develop Flash Player in the browser to work with new mobile device configurations (chipset, browser, OS version, etc.) following the upcoming release of Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook.”
Admitting HTML5’s rise in use, Adobe referred to HTML5 as the “best solution for creating and deploying content in the browser across mobile platforms.”
However, the company is already working on Flash Player 12 and a new round of exciting features which it expects to again advance what is possible for delivering high definition entertainment experiences. It will continue to leverage its experience with Flash to accelerate its work with the W3C and WebKit to bring similar capabilities to HTML5 as quickly as possible, just as they did with CSS Shaders. And, they will design new features in Flash for a smooth transition to HTML5 as the standards evolve so developers can confidently invest knowing their skills will continue to be leveraged.
On the other hand, the shift towards HTML5 doesn’t necessarily signal the end for Flash altogether. The company says it will continue to invest in Flash in the areas of “premium video” and “advanced gaming.”
