The OpenNebula Project today launched OpenNebula 4.0, the fourth release of OpenNebula cloud management platform, an open-source solution deployed to build and manage virtualized data centers and enterprise clouds.
Keeping in tradition of naming the new releases on lines of a Nebula, OpenNebula 4.0 has been named ‘Eagle’ after Eagle Nebula, a young open cluster of stars in the constellation Serpens, located about 7,000 light-years away from Earth.
Developed with help of feedback and contributions from its users, including the likes of NASA, Blackberry, Dell, Cisco and Akamai, OpenNebula 4.0 comes with various bug fixes and new features in most of its subsystems, with some of being:
1] A redesigned Sunstone, with sleek and modern look and an updated workflow for most of the dialogs. Overview of the same can be seen below:
2] Sunstone Views functionality which replaces the 3.x self-service portal. It provides the ability to customize the GUI for each type of users or user groups thereby ensuring that the interface implements a different provisioning model for each role. An overview of the same can be seen below:

3] New operations for Virtual Machines:
- VM System Snapshots.
- Disk Snapshots.
- Capacity re-sizing.
- Programmable VM operations.
- NIC hotplugging.
- IPv6 Support.

- User defined VM tags.
- Powerful CLI.
4] Better back-end technology:
- Improved DN management.
- Support for Xen 3 & Xen 4.
- Custom attributes for VMware VMX files.
- Improved iSCSI support.
- Addition of new drivers like Ceph.
5] Improvements for VMware, KVM and Xen.
OpenNebula Project has also announced that OpenNebulaApps 4.0 will be available for download for OpenNebula 4.0 cloud in a few days along with AppStage, AppFlow and AppMarket.
