GlobalSign , one of the longest established Certification Authorities (CA) and leading providers of online security solutions, today announced the launch of a new solution to help companies overcome IP restrictions when it comes to implementing SSL security. Using a combination of Server Name Indication (SNI) technology and a multi-domain certificate, SSL can be deployed much faster as multiple certificates can run on a single IP address and no DNS updates are required. This fully compatible solution opens a way to free up IPv4 resources until the IPv6 protocol becomes more widely available.

Specialists in web hosting Partner Programs, GlobalSign has been working closely with the hosting industry for years to develop solutions truly adapted to their requirements. The rapidly decreasing availability of IPv4 addresses has limited the way hosting companies can resell SSL to their customer base, as typically each SSL Certificate must be hosted on a dedicated IP address. The Server Name Indication extension of the SSL protocol was developed for this purpose. However, the lack of adoption of the technology in certain browsers and operating systems means that a number of users are not able to view the secured sites.
To remedy this issue and avoid cutting access to a number of website visitors, GlobalSign has developed a revolutionary method which uses SNI in combination with GlobalSign CloudSSL technology. Each website will be secured with its own individual SSL Certificate, enabling the use of any type of certificate up to the highest Extended Validation level.
Each domain will then also be added to a CloudSSL Certificate (a “multi-domain” certificate) which will automatically be served to the users that lack SNI compatibility. This revolutionary solution will work transparently for all users and is easy to set up, as the server side application provided by GlobalSign automates the full process.
“GlobalSign is familiar with the obstacles hosting companies face when it comes to reselling SSL and the impact of the IPv4 shortage on their daily operations”, says Paul van Brouwershaven, EMEA Business Development Director, GMO GlobalSign Ltd. “We are dedicated to facilitating the mass deployment of SSL security, and removing the requirement for dedicated IP addresses will be crucial in helping the hosting industry achieve this.”
