Rackspace has named Van Lindberg as the new vice president of intellectual property . Lindberg brings a huge amount of experience to the table and the appointment helps to protect the company as it continues to expand its operations.

Before joining the cloud-hosting provider, Lindberg served as an expert in patent and property prosecution for Haynes and Boone, LLP in Richardson. During his six years at the company, he spent much of his time providing IP advice and giving early-stage start-ups patent prosecution services. Lindberg is also author of a book on the open source licensing model titled, “Intellectual Property and Open Source” which has been well received.

His expertise gained from working with this company fits in well with Rackspace’s latest emphasis on the OpenStack system. It also supports the direction the company wants to take in relation to open source systems. For the company, it is a major boon in attracting additional enterprise consumers.
Alan Schoenbaum, the General Counsel for the company, released a statement, “As the paths for open source and cloud computing intersect rapidly and patent trolling continues to run rampant, Van’s experience in managing patents in open source models will be key to the continued success of the Rackspace open cloud.”
The cloud hosting company has had issues with patent trolls in the past. A recent case claimed Rackspace’s activities infringed on thirteen different patents. Such actions take away resources from the company and prevent it from moving forward as it would like.
Lindberg was named on the list of ‘America’s Top 12 Techiest Attorneys’ as part of a study by the American Bar Association Journal and also served as chairman of the Python Software Foundation.
