UPDATE: All systems are back to normal as per the FourSquare support! Resume your check-ins.
FourSquare, a location-based social networking website for mobile devices, such as smartphones, faced downtime on 07:07am EST, 1/24/2013. The issue came to light when many users faced problems with check-in. Initially thought to be some networking error, the downtime was conformed once many twitter users tweeted about it and intimated Foursquare.
FourSquare acted promptly and acknowledged the downtime by tweeting about the same. It later updated the status on status.foursquare.com . As of 8:35pm EST, they were not able to identify the root of the problem and weren’t able to rectify it. The update read-” The site is down and we’re investigating now. Will update as soon as we have more information. Thanks for your patience! “
