Shared hosting operating system developer CloudLinux, announced today the launch of Amazon Machine Images pre-configured with CloudLinux. The images are now available for Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) users across all territories, making it easier to try CloudLinux or provision new CloudLinux servers in the cloud.
“The Amazon cloud platform is a fantastic way to make hardware power more accessible and more affordable,” says Igor Seletskiy, Founder and CEO at CloudLinux. “We are seeing more shared hosting providers using Amazon EC2 to run shared hosting servers in the cloud, giving their customers better uptime and availability. But as hosting companies are charged for server usage on a resource basis, it is more important than ever to take control over how shared hosting customers use their accounts. CloudLinux makes that possible.”
The Amazon EC2 service is a large-scale computing cloud, allowing customers to run multiple servers with uptime and scalability. If a user requires more hardware power, they can allocate more hardware resources, including RAM, CPU, and disk space, to a server. Conversely, it is quick and easy to dial down resources as necessary. Shared hosting providers only pay for the hardware power they use, either by the amount of data transferred or for the number of instances in operation. To help hosting companies keep their cloud usage within budget, CloudLinux places each individual shared hosting account in an isolated container, known as a Lightweight Virtual Environment (LVE). Hosting providers can then assign specific resource limits to each account, keeping performance consistent and within server capacity.
“CloudLinux and Amazon EC2 are a perfect match for web hosting providers,” says Seletskiy. “But until now, CloudLinux had to be installed manually whenever a new cloud server was provisioned. With the launch of our new Amazon EC2 images, customers can get a pre-configured server that includes Plesk or cPanel and a minimal, lightweight installation of CloudLinux. Trying CloudLinux for the first time or launching new CloudLinux servers is streamlined, saving hosting companies time and effort as their businesses grow. We have also taken steps to ensure CloudLinux achieves the best possible performance on the Amazon EC2 platform.”
Amazon EC2 offers a range of different storage types, but the most efficient solution is the Amazon Elastic Block Store . EBS is persistent storage for EC2 instances, where high-availability volumes ensure data is always available when a user requests it. To guarantee servers deployed using the CloudLinux Amazon Machine Images deliver lightning-fast performance to hosting providers, shared hosting customers, and their visitors, the images are available in EBS-optimized instances. As a result, virtual machines in the cloud take full advantage of the EBS storage system’s potential Input/Output Operations per Second (IOPS). Using EBS-optimized instances, hosting providers can achieve disk read and write operation speeds of up to 1000 Mbps, fast enough for even the most demanding web applications and services.
“Offering CloudLinux on Amazon EC2 makes life easier for shared hosting providers,” says Seletskiy. “There is no denying CloudLinux is a fast, reliable, and consistent operating system that empowers hosting providers to deliver desirable and valuable services to their customers. Now, on the Amazon EC2 platform, hosting companies can start using CloudLinux from within the existing Amazon interface.”
Both Amazon EC2 and CloudLinux give hosting companies more control over how their servers are used, in addition to better uptime and processing speed. By bringing these two powerful platforms together, CloudLinux is enabling hosting providers to get high-performance and high-availability servers without a complex and time-consuming workload.
