In a bid to further expand its presence in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, the French cloud computing company OVHcloud announced the launch of its first data center in Mumbai, India on March 21, 2023. As a part of its Asia Pacific expansion plans, the company will also see the installation of two more data centers in Australia and Singapore by 2024.
OVHcloud is one of the leaders in providing sustainable cloud solutions, leveraging state-of-art technology such as circulatory and water cooling at scale to help company’s infrastructure to adapt to tropical climate of the country. The company will also be manufacturing its own servers that are integrated with industrial models that allow a sustainable cloud with a Carbon Usage Effectiveness of 0.2.
Though the exact location of the data center is not disclosed, the facility has been established in the commercial hub of the city to provide Indian businesses with computing and storage capabilities and meet their ever-growing data needs. The company offers to provide its customers with open, trusted, sovereign and sustainable cloud solutions.
OVHcloud’s data center facility is entering the Indian market at an opportune time, considering there has been a surge in cloud adoption. The Indian government has been driving digital transformation on a national scale under the Digital India government campaign, resulting in both businesses and government sectors relying heavily on the cloud, so much so that the cloud will account for almost 8% of India’s GDP.
“Already one of our top-performing markets in the APAC region, India continues to demonstrate remarkable potential for business growth. The strategic deployment of our first data centre in India is a firm testimony to that potential, and an affirmation of our commitment to customers and partners here,” said Terry Maiolo, Vice President and General Manager, APAC, OVHcloud.
“Our new generation of data centres, coupled with enhanced compute and scalable storage capabilities, will elevate our ability to provide customers in India and the region with high-performance cloud solutions that have optimised and predictable price-performance ratios, even as their needs evolve,” he added.
Over the past couple of years, the Government of India has taken strict initiatives over data sovereignty and environmental concerns, by pushing for better data protection laws that are compatible with a growing digital economy. The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill and National Data Governance Framework Policy and IT Rules allow a safer and more sovereign growth of the digital economy of the country.
India has also taken the reins of G20 focusing on digital innovation, setting up a new trade and technology council with the European Union to drive green technologies and trade and digital transformation and implementing data regulations that comply with international standards of data protection that require strong consent-based data privacy policies.
“Data sovereignty and sustainability will continue to be key priorities that have to be balanced with rapidly increasing digital needs. We are confident that new data centres will further help OVHcloud’s goal of becoming the cloud provider of choice for customers in the region, in enabling them to remain compliant while benefiting from our unique proposition of an open, reversible and sustainable cloud,” said Micheal Paulin, CEO of OVHcloud.
The company strives to reduce the latency between India and Europe through the launch of this data center facility, as well as allow local customers with instant access to their data and cloud resources, all the while adhering strictly to the data compliance regulations.
“Since the expansion of our presence in the Asia Pacific market, the region has experienced phenomenal growth in its digital economy. India, Singapore and Australia remain critical markets that are driving this growth from a business transformation and digital innovation perspective,” added Michel Paulin.
The Mumbai data center is part of the company’s strategic plan to build 15 new sites by 2024.
