Microsoft to set up three more data centers in Hyderabad

Microsoft is strengthening its cloud infrastructure with the expansion of its data center presence in India. With the announcement of the additional three facilities in Hyderabad alongside their existing set, Microsoft will now have total six data centers in Telangana.

This move was announced during the World Economic Forum (WEF) where Minister of IT and Industries of Telangana, K T Rama Rao held talks with Microsoft Asia President, Ahmed Mazhari at the Microsoft Cafe in Davos, Switzerland.

“Microsoft and Hyderabad have had a very long and mutually beneficial relationship. I am very happy to learn that Microsoft will expand in Telangana with such huge digital infrastructure projects. I look forward to seeing Microsoft continue to grow in the State”, said Minister Rama Rao.

“Hyderabad is one of our most important markets across the world and we will continue to invest in the city. The data center projects we are deploying in Telangana are fully owned projects in India by Microsoft”, commented Ahmed Mazhari, President, Microsoft Asia.

Telangana is proactively embracing new technologies to provide its citizens with the best of services through digital platforms. The new Microsoft data centers in the state can handle an average IT load of 100 MW each. This project will be implemented gradually. All six data centers are estimated to be deployed over a period of 10-15 years and are an integral part of Microsoft’s goal of strengthening its cloud infrastructure In India to serve Azure customers in the country and around the globe.

Driven by the data boom, digital transformation and local data storage mandates, the data center capacity in India is expected to double from 875MW to around 1800MW by 2025. The Indian data center market that stood at US$ 1.3 billion in 2016 and US$ 4.4 billion in 2020, is anticipated to grow to US$ 8.0 billion by 2026.

To promote the growth of the Indian data center market, the Telangana government announced rebates on building fees and concession on land fees, preference to start-up/ SMEs for data center services, concessional fuel price for backup power sources, and exemption from the purview of statutory power cuts.

India currently stands as a prime destination for data centers, supported by a growing market. Comprising over 100 data centers locally operated and held by massive tech brands alike, India is sure to remain and keep growing as an attractive IT hub globally.
