More than 95% of new malware threats discovered in 2022 are aimed at Windows

Windows is the most popular operating system (OS) among desktop and laptop users and occupies around 30% of the OS market share worldwide. This may be one of the reasons why it is being targeted the by malware.

Based on AV-TEST GmbH statistics, analysis by Atlas VPN team shows that 59.58 million new Windows malware samples were detected during the first three quarters of 2022. These account for 95.6% of all new malware discovered in that period.

Linux malware takes the second place on the list with 1.76 million new malware samples. 2.8% of the total new malware threats were aimed at Linux in Q1 through Q3 of 2022.

Linux is followed by Android malware. During the first three quarters of 2022, 938,379 new Android malware threats were discovered. This constitutes 1.5% of the new malware in Q1 through Q3 of 2022.

8,329 new malware threats aimed at macOS were detected in the same period.

Cybercriminals are always creating new malware threats, even with all of the anti-malware measures that exist today. In the first three quarters of 2022, 62.29 million new malware samples were detected on all types of operating systems. That’s almost 228,164 malware threats every day. 

However, there has been a decrease of 34% in new malware samples when compared to the same period last year. Although this is a downward trend, the number of threats remains high.
