US-based digital infrastructure provider Equinix Inc announced an initial investment of over $86 million for building its third International Business Exchange (IBX) data center in Mumbai. This initial investment made by Equinix includes a land acquisition that provides a total space of about four acres.
The third data center, which will be called MB3, will be located in the Chandivali area near Equinix’s existing 2 facilities and will house over 4150 cabinets delivering an IT load of 24MW. The first phase of MB3 is expected to be open in the second quarter of 2024 with over 1375 cabinets.
Manoj Paul, Managing Director, Equinix India said, “The increasing digitalization of the economy is continuously driving the demand for data center and interconnection services in India. Particularly in Mumbai, the high demand for our digital infrastructure services among Indian and international customers is making us very optimistic about the market. We are focused on further investments in building the infrastructure in India to enable our existing and new customers in India to launch their services closer to their consumers.”
Equinix entered India in 2021 with the acquisition of two data centers in Mumbai named MB1 and MB2 which provides a total of 1,350 cabinets. Equinix data centers in Mumbai support the digital infrastructure of over 270 international and regional companies. The continued investment of Equinix in Mumbai is a further enhancement of its network-dense and interconnection-rich data center platform in India, which meets significant demand from global and local customers. Equinix had also announced its expansion to the Chennai market in March 2022 with a land acquisition of over 5.5 acres.
Equinix operates over 240 data centers globally across 70 metros supporting 10000 businesses. It runs 52 data centers in key metros in Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, and Singapore in the Asia-Pacific region.
