The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued new directions related to information security practices, procedure, prevention, response and reporting of cyber incidents under which, all internet service providers, social media platforms, data centers and all other government and private agencies should mandatorily report cybersecurity incidents within six hours of noticing them.

As per provisions of section 70B of the Information Technology Act, 2000, CERT-In continuously analyses cyber threats and handles the cyber incidents that are tracked and reported to it. It also regularly issues advisories to organisations and users to enable them to protect their data/information and ICT infrastructure. CERT-In has identified gaps that hinder the analysis of cybersecurity incidents. The newly issued guidelines are meant to address the identified gaps.
The directions include synchronization of ICT system clocks, mandatorily reporting of cyber incidents to CERT-In within six hours, maintaining of logs of ICT systems, keeping record of customer registrations details by data centers, Virtual Private Server (VPS) providers, VPN service providers and cloud service providers. These directions shall become effective after 60 days and enhance the overall cyber security posture while ensuring safe and trusted internet in the country.
