Microsoft this week announced the acquisition of BlueTalon, a leading provider of Unified Data Access Control solutions for modern data platforms.

Based in California, BlueTalon provides a data-centric solution for data access management and auditing of modern data estates. This helps enterprises to get rid of the data security blind spots and get better control and visibility of their data.

Enterprises can capture and analyse the data to better understand the day-to-day operations and define policies to authorize users to have access to that data. Eventually, it protects the critical information of companies from fraudulent attempts.

“The IP and talent acquired through BlueTalon brings a unique expertise at the apex of big data, security and governance. This acquisition will enhance our ability to empower enterprises across industries to digitally transform while ensuring right use of data with centralized data governance at scale through Azure,” Rohan Kumar, Corporate Vice President, Azure Data, Microsoft commented in blog post.

The data landscape has changed over the years. The size and diversity of data estates have increased, which has made the data management and governance difficult for data engineers and data scientists. According to a Gartner survey, 57% of respondents said that ‘supporting data governance and data security’ is one the biggest challenges when it comes to data management.

The new acquisition is aimed to address this challenge and simplify the data privacy and governance for enterprises. BlueTalon will soon become a part of Microsoft’s Azure Data Governance group.

The BlueTalon team will “make data easily and safely accessible across the enterprise by providing high quality data governance and compliance solutions,” Eric Tilenius, CEO, BlueTalon says in a blog post.

“As we began exploring partnership opportunities with various hyperscale cloud providers to better serve our customers, Microsoft deeply impressed us. The Azure Data team was uniquely thoughtful and visionary when it came to data governance. We found them to be the perfect fit for us in both mission and culture. So when Microsoft asked us to join forces, we jumped at the opportunity,” he added.
