VS Code, React, and Tensorflow continue to be the top open source projects in 2018: GitHub’s State of the Octoverse 2018 report

Over 8 million new developers joined GitHub in 2018, that’s more than the developers who joined it in first six years combined. According to “The State of the Octoverse 2018” report by GitHub, the total number of developers on GitHub has now reached over 31 million.

Of the total developers, around 80% of them are from outside of the US. GitHub welcomed its 30 millionth developers in July this year. More and more developers are joining the open source code repository because of ease of development, effective tools, enhanced security, etc. The report reveals that there are 1.6x more unique contributors in 2018 as compared to 2017.

2018 is the year when GitHub was acquired by Microsoft, which was very big move. In the same year, GitHub celebrated its 10^th anniversary, launched GitHub Enterprise 2.14, and recently rolled out new collaboration and security features to advance software development.

Highlights of ‘The State of the Octoverse 2018’ report by GitHub:

• 40% more organizations joined GitHub in 2018

The number of organizations that use GitHub has increased by more than 40% this year to reach over 2.1 million. These organizations are using GitHub across both public and private repositories.

The new organization accounts increased even faster in 2018, specially across the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

• GitHub has more than 96 million repositories

At the end of September 2018, the total number of repositories were found to be more than 96 million. It is an increase of around 40% over last year. Further, one-third of the repositories on GitHub were created in last 12 months alone.

• Most of the GitHub contributors are from US, China and India

For last few years, developers from the US, China, India, and UK are contributing the most on GitHub.

Brazil has made impressive progress over the years to reach the 7^th rank from 10^th.

• Most open source projects have been created in Asia

According to the report, developers from Asia are responsible for the most growth in repositories in 2018. They have overtaken all the other regions in monthly repository creation.

• VS Code, React, and Tensorflow are the top open source projects

By contributor count, Microsoft’s VS Code, Facebook’s React, and Tensorflow are the top open source projects.

New open source projects that made to the top 10 list are the ones that manage Kubernetes, Azure Docs, and DefinitelyTyped.

• Azure Docs and PyTorch are the fastest growing open source projects

GitHub found growth in open source projects which were related to machine learning, gaming, 3D printing, home automation, scientific programming, data analysis, and full stack JavaScript development.

Developers are increasingly using Azure Docs, PyTorch, and Godot to build the trending open source projects.

• Employees from Microsoft, Google, Red Hat, and Intel contribute most to open source

Millions of developers are driving the open source development. Many are from the leading companies that employ those developers.

Microsoft, Google, Red Hat, and Intel top the list of companies whose developers contribute the most to open source.

• JavaScript and Java are still the top languages used on GitHub

While developers use several programming languages on GitHub, the JavaScript and Java are still used the most. The report says that JavaScript has the most contributors in public and private repositories, in all regions.

• 33% rise in number of apps on GitHub

In last 12 months, the number of apps on GitHub has increased by 33%. Also, the number of users who installed apps on GitHub has doubled over the same period.
