At DockerCon 2018, Docker announced three new capabilities for its enterprise-grade products to simplify the development and management of software container applications on premises and across multi-clouds.
Two of the new features are targeted at Docker Enterprise Edition (EE), while the one is for Docker Desktop. Docker EE is a leading container platform, while Docker Desktop is a desktop environment used to build applications.
Talking about the Docker EE, it is getting federated application management feature, and support for Kubernetes on Windows Server.
The federated application management feature will automate the management and security of container applications on premises and across Kubernetes-based cloud services.
It will provide a single management platform to enterprises so that they can centrally control and secure the software supply chain for all the containerized applications.
“With an estimated 85 percent of today’s enterprise IT organizations employing a multi-cloud strategy, it has become more critical that customers have a ‘single pane of glass’ for managing their entire application portfolio,” said Scott Johnston, Chief Product Officer at Docker.
Docker has collaborated with Microsoft to add support for Kubernetes for DEE version that runs on Windows Server. This will open a door of new opportunities for enterprises as Docker is the only platform to support production-grade Linux and Windows containers, as well as dual orchestration options with Swarm and Kubernetes.
“Docker Enterprise Edition delivers on the promise of the cloud by offering customers the portability benefits of containerized applications and the portable management of those containerized applications across all infrastructure. Additionally, Docker EE is the only container platform to manage and secure both legacy and modern applications in Linux, Windows and multi-cloud customer environments, offering customers unparalleled choice and the flexibility to evolve their environments as their business requirements change,” added Scott Johnston.
Talking about the new capabilities for Docker Desktop, it is getting new template-based workflows which will enable developers to build new containerized applications without having to learn Docker commands or write Docker files.
Docker said that the template-based workflows will also help development teams to share their own practices within the organization.

The new features are expected to be available in beta in second half this year.
