Oracle promotes intelligent multi-cloud management and serverless deployment by open sourcing Kubernetes tools

2 Mins read

At the KubeCon + CloudNativeCon 2017 conference in Austin, Oracle open sourced two new Kubernetes tools designed for helping developers develop container-native applications utilizing Kubernetes. This move will provide a technology stack that’s community-driven, open-sourced, cloud-neutral and integrated with container technology to enable customers to experience the flexibility of hybrid and multi-cloud deployments, without being worried for cloud lock-in.

The new projects─ Fn project Kubernetes Installer and Global Multi-Cluster Management, are integrated with the Oracle Container Native Application Development Platform, and offer developers an enterprise-grade platform to build, deploy and operate applications.

“There continue to be significant concerns by developers looking into serverless development that cloud providers are leading them into a lock-in situation and away from industry standards,” said Mark Cavage, vice president of software development at Oracle. “The Oracle Container Native Application Development Platform, along with the new tools introduced today, are built on top of Kubernetes and provide an open source based, community driven, and thus, cloud-neutral, integrated container native technology stack that prevents cloud lock-in while enabling the flexibility of true hybrid and multi-cloud deployments.”

Fn project Kubernetes Installer

The Fn project Kubernetes Installer is built upon Oracle’s container-native serverless platform Fn project which the company announced in October this year at Oracle OpenWorld. Oracle said that the Fn project supports every programming language, and can be run on any cloud or on-premise.

Fn Project Kubernetes Installer, the Helm Chart for Fn, enables the developers to install and run Fn on any Kubernetes environment including Oracle’s new managed Kubernetes service called Oracle Container Engine Cloud (OCE) Service.

Global Multi-Cluster Management

It consists of a range of new cluster management features for Kubernetes federation, enabling organizations to intelligently manage large scale applications that are multi-region, hybrid, or multi-cloud.

Using these capabilities, the customers can create and auto-scale global applications or spot clusters as per demand, along with enabling hybrid scenarios and cloud migrations.

It makes intelligent decisions to ensure that the clusters are created, sized and destroyed only when needed on the basis of requested application deployments. No clusters will be created in case no application deployment requests are found.

The Oracle Container Native Application Development Platform and its serverless tools working on top of Kubernetes, address the challenges associated with the application of rules to container native deployments like regional affinity, service quality, compliance, cost and performance.
