IoT boosts spending on IT infrastructure, edge, storage and cloud: 451 Research

2 Mins read

As per a latest report by 451 Research, it was found that the latest trends and uses of Internet of Things (IoT) and the huge amount of data generated by it is having a huge impact on the enterprise IT.

Built on cloud computing and networks of data gathering sensors, IoT revolves around Machine to Machine (M2M) communication. The study incorporated over 575 responses from senior IT buyers and global IoT decision-makers based in Europe and North America primarily.

In the analysis, it was found that 32.4% organizations are planning to increase their storage capacities, 30.2% are planning increase in network edge equipment, 29.4% in server infrastructure and 27.2% are about to increase their off- premises cloud infrastructure in the next 12 months, so that they can manage the IoT deployment and its data storm.

Most of the IT-centric projects today, including the datacenter management and surveillance, are the IoT use cases. About 65.6% of respondents were planning to increase their spending on IoT projects in next 12 months and only 2.7% said they were planning a reduction.

The collection, storage, transport, and analysis of Internet of Things data is having a significant impact on all the aspects of IT industry, as per the research. Most of the companies who responded, initially stored (53.1%) and analyzed (59.1%) IoT data at their own datacenter.

“Companies are processing IoT workloads at the edge today to improve security, process real-time operational action triggers, and reduce IoT data storage and transport requirements. While some enterprises say that in the future they will do more analytics – including heavy data processing and analysis driven by big data or AI – at the network edge, for now that deeper analysis is happening in company-owned datacenters or in the public cloud.”-Rich Karpinski, Research Director for Voice of the Enterprise: Internet of Things

The cloud storage provides a greater flexibility and significant cost savings to the organizations, hence the number of organizations who store their data on cloud is increasing. Nearly one-third of the companies said they moved their IoT data to cloud while two-third preferred the local storage.

Despite the centralization of IoT data, about half of the respondents said that they preferred edge for IoT data processing, including data analysis, data aggregation or data filtering, either on the IoT device (22.2%) or in nearby IT infrastructure (23.3%).

Almost half of respondents believed that finding IoT-skilled workers is a challenge for them, since the data analytics, security and virtualization capabilities are the skills in demand.
